Bob Doerr asked:
We seek the ancestry of the St. Louis DEWES family. We have exhausted the
possibility of a connection with the well-documented DEWES clan of near
Illinois and their superbly-documented cousins in Losheim. So, we suspect
that they emigrated from Britain.
Any leads, please? Suggestions?
Hi Bob,
You didn't give us an indication of what sort of date span you were looking
at and if the Brit.1881 census was any help with family naming patterns. If
your folk simply entered England from Europe to catch a boat, there won't be
much chance of finding a record of their journey - there were 4 million
people migrating through England in one year alone travelled from Europe.
To research British records, the government site (www dot 'pro' dot 'gov'
dot 'uk') gives advice on searching for passports and they've started to
put them online. You may also like to trawl through their other www site -
simply type 'documentsonline' dot before the 'pro' which show 17 campaign
medals and 25 wills. Sorry about writing 'dot' instead of '.' - this email
will be classed as spam & won't get through if I type the websites.
There is no record online of a 'Dewes' being in the Hannover army, but I did
find mention of the name in the 20th century army 1914-1934 as shown under
reference 'WO'.
