Counties of Schwerin

I am trying to find my ancestors (SCHMIDT and LATOUR) from Schwerin, Germany.
I found a web site to investigate, but it calls for the County in Schwerin
my ancestors were from. I have no idea. Does any one have a suggestion?

Barb,
Have you tried leaving it blank? Do you have a city?

If not, think about where you can look... you will need the city to order
any films to search birth, deaths, marriages... Here are some
suggestions.... check any documents you have, ask any family, search the
sites below that often give the city...
Have you found your family at all at www.familysearch.org?
Have you searched your family at www.rootsweb.com?
www.geneanet.org
www.genealogy.com

If all that fails ask on the lists if someone can help you. Give as much
information as you can. Many cities have changed names, some no longer
exisit, some you will need to get records from another nearby city, some
cities are small and obscure. In Belgium I had a county and not a city.
After trying everything, I finally did a search on www.google.com for
genealogy + surname. I searched current telephone books to see where the
name was occurring... My Mecklenburg-Schwerin family came from a tiny
village that even today has only 500 people. On all the locators I could
not find it until I went to www.altavista.de and typed the name in (watch
for umlauts) I typed Moenchhagen and Monchhagen and got a website.

If you know the city you can order films from the LDS and study them at a
research center.
Hope it helps.
