Dear Listers; I am writing a book on Clinton County, IL and the German Immigrants. I want to answer to 2 questions. What was going on in Germany 1820-1870 that even made them think about leaving? Why Clinton County IL? I want to tie the immigrants back to the towns they came from as there seems to be several families from the same towns. If you could help I would greatly appreciate it. Hi Pat, I have read of many reasons for emigration, famine, disease, oppression.
One reason for emigration is population growth, as this site says of Buer area.
"The 19th century saw a strong population growth. In 1842 the parish had 5800 inhabitants. About
two-thirds were Heuerlinge and day laboureres with little income."
Interesting bit of history on the site.
