Hello all,
Does anyone know how the German name of Clamor translates into English?
It seems like the name was usually dropped when they came to the USA. Maybe Charles? Carl? Christian? Something totally different? For that matter, does anyone know where the name came from? Origin? meaning?
If you have Clamor in your ancestor's name and are willing to share the name they used in place of Clamor when he got to the USA, that may really help. (I'm searching for someone with that name who fought in the Civil War and wasn't using Clamor as a name.)

The Clamor name is a name passed down in the noble family von dem
Bussche
who had lots of properties and still do have around Melle and
Osnabrueck.
I have never met it in other regions. But when you see it, you can bet
there
is a von dem Bussche around the "bush"

I don't think Clamor is translatable. It is what it is. How people changed it
over here would be anyone's guess. Since I have a few Clamors from
the Osnabrück area within the old kingdom of Hannover let me venture
to say that I think the name was an attempt at uppityness or status
within society back in the 18th and 10th centuries. In my expereince
farmers were not named Clamor but civil servants and minister types
were. In German we would call that the Beamtenwelt. I may be wrong
but my suspicion is based on seeing this name here and there over time
simply because it is such a strange name.
