My apologies if this has been asked before...
I have been searching through microfilm of some old church records. Can
someone clarify for me the various styles of crosses written in the margins.
I figure they are death dates, but am uncertain as to the meaning of the
styles of the crosses. The records I am looking at are in Latin, and are
from 1780 - 1837. This is from Catholic Records of Brochthausen (Kreis
Duderstadt.)
Also - can anyone suggest where I may find access to more records? There are
only a few dates available on film through the LDS.
Thank you,
Cindy Krieter
Hello Cindy,
You might try the email address for the archives of Hildesheim:
bistumsarchiv@bistum-hildesheim.de
I think that is the diocese covering Brochthausen. However, if that is a
LDS copy of the records for Brochthausen, that could be as complete a
record that there is. From reading the film notes, it looks as though
it covers 1677-1853. The births, deaths and marriages may be all together
and not separated. Some older Catholic church records just are incomplete.
The only other alternative is to go there yourself--or hire someone. But I
suspect there aren't any more church records than what you have. You might
take a look at the civil records listed with the LDS, but they cover very
few years.
Or else--you just hope you can find someone who has already researched your
family. You should post your names on this list.
