To everyone letting me know the date setting was wrong. I checked, sent a letter to myself and it seems correct. My husband just replaced the battery in the computer, so it may have had something to do with it. If it is still wrong, please let me know.
Thank you JB for the useful information. I appreciate it. I have been concentrating on finding death records, but haven't been successful for Charles yet. Albert came to California and raised his family and that is where most of the family stayed. I have only dabbled at this over the years, but I have more time now.
Again, thanks to everyone for all the help.

Replacing the battery often craps this setting. It should be able to be corrected via the Windows taskbar [Systray area, lower right], but if not, it can be changed in the BIOS itself. On older systems, you occasionally had to CLEAR the CMOS settings in memory (leave the battery out for an hour or so, or short (jumper) the CMOS at the battery point. Your PC manual might detail this more.
=> PS. Just checked :: looks AOK now.

Death records and those associative ones as mentioned also! Leave no stone unturned whenever possible. It used to be infinitely easier (and cheaper) to do such record pulls in Cal until recent legislation changed all that (just as is happening in Indiana now, and a few other states to boot. Once Cal goes down, others inevitably follow!). Now you have to pay more, and cannot freely browse and transcribe the documents as in the past. All in the name of more Homeland Security + Identity-Theft protection!
Keep working the census records and keep us posted B. You may pinpoint Charles last know whereabouts thru them. Then try writing or e-mailing to the local or state registrar for the D-cert (or get on a mailing list pertinent to that area, and inquire further). If nothing else, you have your Loges surname in the H-L Archives now (along with your own name and addy), and that can never hurt.

It's right now. Thanks.
My email program sorts messages by date, and if a message comes in with the wrong date, I have to go hunting to find the message marked "new."
