Hello!
During the next day the software that is running this mailing list and
all other lists at genealogy.net is going to be updated. There should
only be two minor restrictions to this list during the update process:
- Delivery of messages will be delayed by about one day.
- The web interface for this list will not be available during the
update process.
Arther Teschler, owner of the mailman software, that this list is
running on, will send a message when the update is starting and when
it is finished.
There will be at least two changes after installation of the new
software, that are described below:
1) In order to allow easier tracking of error messages, there will be
a more cryptic sending address displayed in the header fields
"Sender:", "Return-Path:", and "Errors-To:". These fields normally are
not visible to a user.
However, due to an error in MS Outlook and MS Outlook Express, users
of those email programs may see this morphed sender field.
This change in sender address has no effect on sending and recieving
messages or on answering messages. It will be hidden to most users
anyway. The header fields "From:" and "To:" will remain the same as
they have been before.
2) This second change does only effect those users that are subscribed
to Hannover-L with more than one address:
A control message will be sent to all addresses that are set to
"nomail" right now. These control messages will help cleaning the
membership list from dead addresses. So, all people that are
subscribed with more than one address will recieve such a control
message. This message contains a link where the user can set his
address to "nomail" again.
If the user doesn't take any action after those control messages, the
address is regarded broken and will be deleted from membership list
after the third message.
Currently I don't know the new software myself and therefore cannot
give any other information than above. From late Thursday on, I'll
answer all questions as soon as possible.
Kind regards,
