Census explanation

Hi List,

I know that Jens Muller-Koppe and his wife are deciphering the 1852 Census of the Kingdom of Hanover.

Can some one explain to me where the area's called: Achim, Bodenwerder, Hoya, Martfeld are located. What is the area called where the Duchy of Braunschweig is located.

My Schrader line comes from somewhere in the Duchy of Braunschweig but I have no idea which of his books I should order.

Thanks, Gail

Hello Gail

It's difficult to tell you which book you should order. Take a look at the
following page

http://www.dhm.de/lemo/objekte/karten/D1871/braunschweig.html

The center of the duchy was Braunschweig (Brunswick) as the name tells and
was a larger area which contains of a lot of towns and villages. I guess
it's necessary to know from which place exactly your ancestor came from.

The Kingdom of Hannover was much larger as the Duchy of Braunschweig.
See Kingdom of Hanover - Wikipedia
The towns you were talking about are still existing. Take a look at Google
maps.

Have a nice evening.

Hi Gail,
I will try to explain:
Achim is today a little town (earlier it was a village) in the south of Bremen - "Lower Saxonia" on the river "Weser"
Bodenwerder is also a little town on the "Weser" , I think 100 km south of Achim
Hoya is situated in the west of Bremen, 40 km
Martfeld is also situated in the south-west of Bremen, 20 km.
I hope you find it??
Greatings from Achim

Hello,

Martfeld is 20 miles southeast of Bremen and administratively part of
Bruchhausen-Vilsen. Hoya is 7 miles southeast of Martfeld. Both were
part of the County of Hoya and the Duchy of Brunswick.

Best wishes,

Mark
