Census(es) in Germany

Moin!
Thank you for the update. This is truly wonderful information and I do look
forward to 1 Sept to see the new materials.

What I don't know is whether or not the region of Osnabrck or the city of
Osnabrck is even covered (and Venne/Broxten as well) in the 1852 census.

I take it that there are no films of the Lutheran Parish records for Osnabrck
City available? anywhere?

Is the Osnabrck census or parish infomation available for research to anyone?
somewhere? We have a need for this information.

(on behalf of relatives of the BLOCK family).

Hello,
I know there are many church records for Evangelical or Lutheran
churches in the LDS holdings. The Catholic diocese of Osnabruck has not
allowed any of their church records to be copied. There seems to be some
civil copies of some Catholic church records, but they are very
incomplete--often of little use. It seems to me that it is hit and miss on
the Evangelical records. To find out:

Go to the LDS website: www.familysearch.org then click on Search for
Ancestors, then click on Family History Catalog, then click on Place and
fill in the box with a name of a city or whatever and you will get the
results.
You can also find out on that website the address of an LDS center near
you, go there and order what films you want and then when they arrive, go
and view them there. You don't have to be Mormon. They are very helpful to
those of us who are not Mormon. I know from experience.

Dear Robert Block!
Dear reders!

What I don't know is whether or not the region of Osnabrück or the
city of Osnabrück is even covered (and Venne/Broxten as well) in the
1852 census.

Yes, the Osnabrück region and city was covered as the whole
Kingdom of Hanover. I do not know yet if the orginal lists of
Osnabrück city and Venne/Broxten (Amt Hunteburg) are preserved
after we have focussed much more on other regions yet.

What I have to say already now is that there are more lost census
records for the Osnabrück region compared with the other Hanover
regions (Aurich, Stade, Hannover, Hildesheim, Lüneburg).

Examples:
The census records of the Ämter Grönenburg and Melle have not
been found yet*, while the Ämter Bersenbrück and Quakenbrück
was found and are complete (and it will be the first one for the
Osnabrück region which will be issued).
* This does not mean that it is for sure that the 1852 census
records of these districts do not exist. There are regions in which
we found census records not in the State Archives, but in the
district (Kreis) or town archives and in one example even in proivate
ownership.

I take it that there are no films of the Lutheran Parish records for
Osnabrück City available? anywhere?

The pre-1853 parish registers of all Lutheran parishes of the city of
Osnabrück were filmed by the Ev-Luth. Landeskirche Hannover.
These films are available for research, but only in the archives of
the Hannover church (in Hannover and Osnabrück). Parish registers
after 1852 have to be acessed at the parishes itself.

The preserved records of the two old Osnabrück Lutheran churches
are:

ST. KATHARINEN
baptisms 1678-1941, 1945-today
marriages 1678-1904, 1913-1941, 1945-today
burials 1801-1942, 1945-today

St. MARIEN
baptisms 1691-1852, 1874-1916, 1921-1941, 1945-today
marriages 1685-1863, 1871-today
burials 1801-1936, 1945-today

For deaths and burials before 1801 one can check the so called
"Läuteregister" (bell ringing registers) which reach back to 1596
(State Archive Osnabrück).

There are no LDS films after the Ev.-Luth. Landeskirche Hannover
do not allow any filming of the LDS.

Best greetings from Bremen, Germany,

Jens
