Dear anyone,
My mother came from a town in Silesia, her family name was "May". The spelling of which doesn't seem Polish and it doesnt' seem German! Although it is a common name in that area. Can anyone explain this and also give me any information on Silesia
Thanks

Dear Ms. Moore,
I have the name "May" in my family tree, but not in Silesia:
Johann Conrad May, ev.,
Verwalter der Malsburg bei Breuna / Administrator of the castle
"Malsburg" near Breuna, Hesse, Germany
born about Oct 1731 in ? (unknown)
died 16.10.1801 in Oberlistingen, Hesse
married about 1759 in ? (unknown)
Wife: Anna Margaretha Gross
I would say that this is definitely a German family name.
Silesia is an area in the East of Germany, now belonging to
Poland. It was for many centuries a German province, named after
the Teutonic tribe of the "Silingen". After the German population
was expelled in 1945/1946, the area was annexed by Poland.
Most cordial regards from Luxembourg
