Calenberg

Hi Doug! My family came from this area as well. I don't know the
boundaries. Our part was sometimes referred to as Southern Calenberg or Amt
Lauenstein; I have seen both areas referenced on old maps. The towns my
family lived in were Marienhagen, Thuste, Duingen and Diensen. These are
little communities west of the Liene River, a few km northwest of Alfeld.
The largest town of any size in the area was Hildesheim. Hope this helps.

Hi Al,

the family of my wife also came from the former Amt Lauenstein that was a part of the Fuerstentum Calenberg. I also have the towns Marienhagen, Thueste, Duingen and Deinsen (the right spelling is Deinsen and Leine, not Diensen and Liene).

What are your names there?

Wilfried (Petersen)

Hi Wilfried!

The only name I have been researching in the area is Tnnies (and the
bewildering variety of spellings it seems to have). We have been able to
trace the family to the early 1500's in Marienhagen. They seem to have been
pretty comfortable with that community; no Tnnies appears to have left it
until the latter part of the 18th century.

Thuste and Deinsen were two communities from which some of my female
ancestors came (the only two I could remember). Thanks for the help in
spelling these German names but I will probably forget what you told me. I
have always had trouble with "ie" words, even in English.

I come from the group of malcontents who wandered off. My G-G-Grandfather
was born in Duingen and married my G-G-Grandmother there. She came from the
Albrecht/Horenkohl family who seemed to be as attached to Duingen as mine
was to Marienhagen.

You seem to know something about Calenberg. and Amt Lauenstein. Even though I referred to these names, I have no idea as to what they were (other than they were some kind of geopolitical entities). I would love to know
how the towns and jobs of my ancestors fit into the social and political structure of their world. My G-G-Grandfather was a "hunter and forestkeeper" for the Kingdom of Hannover and many of his ancestors were foresters as well. My G-G-Grandmother came from a family of potters (Duingen apparently was a center for pottery making). Who owned the land and the facilities in the area (the forests and the pot plant) and to whom did my ancestors bow and curtsy? I don't mean to pounce on you with all these questions but I am starved for information.
