This does sound like a good
interpretation. Another I've heard is it refers to a 'bush near the mill'.
I'm aware that use of 'busch' in a surname usually refers to a forest, not
the literal interpretation of shrub. I know my g-grandfather was listed as
a machinist at a wooden mantle manufacturing company in Louisville KY in a
city directory. Would it be a plausible to stretch this interpretation, to
possibly mean 'one who mills wood'? His father was listed as 'zimmerling'
(carpenter) in church records; yet this is a broad term, and could
include any work involving wood.
You should not get too hung up on the meaning of the name. It's
first use is likely to preceed any wriiten records and what was
eventually written down may be quite different from its actual origin.
None of this would have anything at all to do with any of your
recent ancestors.
Thanks...I did indeed contact her directly, and she confirms that 'mhle'
is a low-german dialect version of 'mhle' (mill). Somehow I can't resist
attempting to apply a more detailed meaning to the name than the obvious.
Don't. If the name goes back to a farm you might be able to find
other uses of the name. You might even find something in the local
history about the place and what it was all about but first
concentrate on finding the where and eveything else will follow.
