I am at a loss as to how this website works. I thought I had requested info concerning the surname Burgdorf who was born in Hildesheim in Hanover about 1825 and emigrated to the USA in 1860. I have had tons of replies but all are for names other than Burgdorf. I am apparently doing something wrong in my search. Can anyone give me help? I do not speak or read German, an obvious disadvantage. Julius Wilhelm Burgdorf left Hamburg in 1860 bound for New Orleans La. I have documentation that shows his place of birth, date of departure, ship (ODER), date of arrival in New Orleans and events following. I do not know the names of his parents, exact date of birth but his age was listed as 33 on the 1860 ship manifest. Unless he traveled with a person without the same surname, he came alone. Any help? _______________________________________________
Dear Max Burgdorf,
this list works as some sort of chat-room, lots of people with different researches get lots of news of different researches. If anybody sees matching his interest with yours or is able to help getting forward in your researches he will answer by list or also directly. As the list is "googled" there is even the chance for no-list-members to read later or earlier your query. So much in short for your general question.
As you have got the name and the birth-place you are much more lucky then many others having only the name of a greater part of country as for example "Kingdom of Hannover". I found for today, respectively 1998 about 20 people named "Burgdorf" in Hildesheim. So there is great probability of common descendants. One way is looking up the actual adresses from "www.tele- fonbuch.de" and phone or write. I would prefere writing with an added translation. The other way is looking up the parish-book with the mormons or asking the actual parish in Hildesheim for doing the job for fees. Depending on the religion you will find the actual adress of the parishes also under "www.telefonbuch.de" giving in the key-word "Kirchen". But you might also much more lucky and somebody has done already "Burgdorf"-researches and can give you directly the wished informations.
Good luck in any way. Hans Peter Albers, Bienenbüttel
