Burgdorf

  Hi Barb

I recieved the Orleans Parish death certificate (?) for Dora Gemmill
who I believe to be a daughter of Julius and Mary Burgdorf. The
certificate is dated Nov. 28, 1927 and says she departed this life on
Oct 15,1927 in San Francisco Ca. Her remains may have been returned to
New Orleans for burial or the certificate was issued for some other
reason. It lists the cause of death and that she was married to Otis
Gemmill. Her age is listed as 60 years, 5 months which coincides with
her birt hdate on April 30 1867. I need to find some way to tie her
marriage name Gemmill, mispelled Bergdorf , to Dorothe Burgdorf on
her birth papers. And if her husband's name is Otis or Otto.

If anyone who reads this knows of a web page that has San Francisco
obituares for 1927 please let me know.

I am positive that the Burgdorfs you refer to are not in my family,
at least through Julius. A relationship may go back to Germany that I
am unaware of.

The Bergdorf referred to in the Poleman of Natchitoches obit is my
uncle, brother of my father, Louis C. Burgdorf, Both Louis and Max
were the sons of Max C. E. Burgdorf Sr.

Maria was the wife of Julius. She comes from Berlin through Bremen.
Her maiden name is Maria Theresa Kirchbein. I have been able to find
some information of the Kirschein line though descendants in Berlin.

I have not abandoned my search for Julius although I have no leads
to pursue at the moment. I want to thank the list for their gracious
help over the years.

Your certain the other Burgdorfs in New Orleans were not relatives?
I think that this Herbert August Bergdorf who was born the same year
as Louis, is the Herbert Burgdorf who was in St. Louis, Missouri at
Concordia Seminary on June 5, 1917 according to WWI draft card.
The birthdate is exactly the same. And is noted he was born in
Louisiana.

Hello Max,

Are you aware of the listing of the Dora Burgdorf in the 1880 census
where she is 13 in Louisiana? She is living with Jas E. Catten. There, it
says her father was born in Holland (!) and mother in Prussia. Is this a
coincidence of the date or the parents are somewhere else?

Hello Max,

I found Dora Gemmill in the census of 1920 as the wife of Otto (Otis)
Gemmill. They were in the San Francisco census. He is 38 and she is his wife
at the age of 50. He was born in Missouri and she in Louisiana. There is
another person living there as well by the name of Harry Hildmann or
Wildmann. Age 19. He is a nephew. Dora's parents are listed as from Germany.
Otto's father born in Missouri and mother in Penn.(?) Dora is the housewife
and Otto is an electrician and it looks like at San Quentin. Both can read
and write.

Actually, I thought the name is Otto, but I have looked again at the
census and it could be Otis. It is really hard to know for sure. I can't
find him anywhere else.

In 1910 a Max Burgdorf family is listed in the Louisiana census, but
Dora is not listed. Another Burgdorf in 1910 Chas. Loulla and Mildred. Also
there is a family of Richard, Elisabeth and Dorothy Burgdorf in 1910.

I hope this will help you. Let me know if there is something else that I
can do.

Barbara
