Burgdorf

Good Morning Hans
You are so kind to write with concern. As to Julius, he arrived in New Orleans 6 Jan 1860 on the ship ODER. There are no other names on the manifest that I am familiar with, defitinely no other Burgdorfs or Kirschbeins. Marie Kirschbein departed from the port of Bremen in 1859 and arrived in New Orleans within a week of Julius's arrival. Even though they came on different ships I sometimes wonder if they knew each other prior to their emigration. Berlin is not just around the corner from Hildesheim so I think that may be a stretch. Marie traveled under her maiden name so I assume she married Julius after arrival in the US. That marriage probably occurred within a year of their arrival since their first child was born in 1862. His name was Max Charles Eugene Burgdorf and I am named after him, Max Henry Burgdorf. I have searched diligently in New Orleans records for a marriage document for Julius and Marie but have not been successful. I just returned from a visit there with no new information. (An aside: the damage from Katrina hurricane in Louisiana and Mississippi is beyond description. Pictures do not tell the devastation)
Julius does show up in US census reports but contains no revealing information. He is listed in the ship's manifest as being a clerk, and he is likewise listed as clerk in a New Orleans city directory.
Thanks for your message,
Max
