Brick wall

I'm looking for any information on my G-G-Grandfather Ignatus Nohearn born
about 1839, who came to New York approximately 1847 from Hanover Germany. I
pick up his trail in United States starting in 1850, but have been unable to
find any information on him before that, except he states he came from Hanover.
Any information and advice wood be greatly appreciated. Ed Chester

Hi Ed,
In the LDS record, there is this:

Harmen Noehern

Birth: 05 OCT 1698 Dolgen, Hannover, Preussen
    Christening:
Death: 14 FEB 1768 Dolgen, Hannover, Preussen

Your family may have dropped the e or changed it from the umlaut over the
"oe". When you go back that far, a lot of names are different.

There is a Dolgen on the map which has no church, but it is near Sehnde.
Unfortunately, the LDS do not have records for Sehnde.

I'll do some more research later. I could be wrong about this name , but
I think it may be close enough.

Hallo Ed Chester,
as Barbara Stewart mentioned , it may be Nöhren (Noehren) from Dolgen, that
belongs to the parish of Haimar.
I have ancestors with this name in the 17. century.

Dear Ed,

Do you know where your Ignatious lived in 1860? I couldn't find him on the census in 1850, 1860 or 1880.

Source Citation: Year: 1870; Census Place: Hempstead, Queens, New York; Roll: M593_1078; Page: 391; Image: 21.

Ignatious, 29 - Hannover

Catherine, 30 - New York

Irving,

Dora,

1900 New York Federal Census
Source Citation: Year: 1900; Census Place: Hempstead, Nassau, New York; Roll: T623_1079 Page: 4B; Enumeration District: 693.

Nathan? NOHEARN April 1839, Farmer, 1846 to U.S.
Catherine wife, March 1838, This census says marriage year 1871? This cannot be right if Nathan is Ignatious and Catherine is the same Catherine of the 1870 census.

Source Citation: Year: 1910; Census Place: Hempstead District 3, Nassau, New York; Roll: T624_994; Page: 2B; Enumeration District: 1105; Image: 774.

Nathon NOHEAM Age 71 - Farmer Home Farm
Isabella - wife? Age 71

The family of Irving are on same page - perhaps census taker mixed up family member names.

This census also appears to read 1847 as arrival to U.S., however index gives 1887. But that would be wrong if he was here in 1870, unless he returned to Germany for a few years.

He must have died after 1910. The wife appears to be living with daughter in 1920.

I couldn't find shiplist either and messed around for quite some time.

Do you know his wifes maiden name? Perhaps if you can locate her family, it will give a clue as to where they might have married and the church record there might have a clue to Ignatius origin.

The only other thing I can think of is searching the communities where he resided, and look for persons of his age group from Hannover or Germany, perhaps he was with a group who came and settled together.

If he did come to U.S. in 1846 and his birth was about 1839 - 1841...he would have been awfully young to have traveled alone from Germany. Under 10 years old.

It seems as if he would have arrived with other family .. perhaps he traveled with married female sibling of his father or mother with another surname.

Perhaps the shiplist did not list the names of the children on the ship.

Were you able to obain a death certificate for your Ignatious/Nathan?

Tell us any further info you might have..wifes maiden, etc. Locacation of residence prior to 1870, perhaps we will be able to sluth him out.

Warmest Regards,

Barbie-Lew
