Who can help?Linda
Hi Linda,
difficult case, you`ve got there. I have been born in Kuhstedt and could provide you further information about Johann Friedrich Hünken (Hinken - but nowadays the name is written with the Umlaut u) born August 8, 1779. In fact, a sister of him is in my line of ancestors and that line is a quite interesting one going back to 1473. But before proceeding you should get the Hofmann / Hackmann issue clarified.
I understand, there are 4 known children of Johann Friedrich Hünken, where the last child Nicholas was presumably documented a different mother. What possible steps could you take?
There is always the chance of errors in the church records. As Karin Nieland has already written, in the baptism record the name of the mother given is Margretha Hofmann. On the other hand Uschi Boes wrote, she found in the Cappel book documenting the local families Rebecka Sophia HACHMANN named as mother. You must know, the online records, where Karin looked at, is a hand-copied version of the church records now located in the Lower Saxony state archive. Maybe the priest made an error while copying the baptism record from his original church book to the copy for the state archive? And who knows, which sources the writers of the book used? I would suggest, you find someone looking at the original church book, which I presume is still located in the local church office at Cappel.
Another step would be to find out more about Margretha Hofmann. I would presume (in conjunction the the above said), she has been a local from Cappel. So find someone to look her up in the Cappel book. If she is listed there being married with a different person during that respective time frame, she can be excluded as the mother.
Good luck in your further research.
Greetings from Berlin
Walter (Wintjen)
