Hi Norma (hi Wolfgang),
1.
It's correct that Gaablau (today: Jablw [the "l" with a crossbar]) is in Silesia - "Lower Silesia" to be exact.
From 1816 it belonged to "Landkreis Bolkenhain", between 1874 and 1934 it was in "Landkreis Landeshut", in 1934 it was integrated into "Landkreis Waldenbuch".
Apart from "Kartenmeister" here are some more useful links to follow:
- Jabłów - Wikipedia
(it really doesn't give much information, but shows the location)
- Jabłów – Wikipedia
Although in German, at the bottom of the webpage you'll find a link to historical and current photos/postcards of the village:
(just click on the postcards/photos to enlarge them)
2.
Trautenau (today: Trutnov) on the other hand is by no means in "East Prussia", it never even belonged to "Prussia", but was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
It was situated in the "Sudetenland" in Northeast Bohemia and today is in the Czech Republic close to the Polish border.
This really makes more sense with regards to "Gaablau" which really was "just across the border in Silesia".
Especially in the 18th and 19 century people made the move from the mountain areas in the south into Silesia because they found better living conditions there (especially much needed work work/jobs)
Here are the links to follow:
- Trutnov – Wikipedia (+ photo of the city center)
or
- Trutnov - Wikipedia (same photo / webcam link)
(historical info in English doesn't work)
You might also go to "Google maps" looking for "Trutnov". From there, just follow "Road No.16 (blue)" north to the Polish border (where it changes into "No.369 (yellow)/No.5 (red)") and then to Kamienna Gra (German: Landeshut). From there "Road No. 267 (yellow) leads you east to Gaablau/Jablw. You have to enlarge the map so that you can read the villages.
Looking for "Trautenau/Trutnov" researchers you should really subscribe to another mailing list - the "ow-preussen-l" is definitely the wrong one:
- http://list.genealogy.net/mm/listinfo/sudeten.bms-l (--> open, German speaking list)
Hope it helps. Regards

Hi Norma,
sorry, it should have been "Road No. 367 (yellow)" !
