Hello Friends,
I would be grateful for any piece of information and assistance! Looking for birth town and parents' names of my gr. grandfather, LEWIS (LUDWIG maybe one of his names?) BÖHNE, born sometime between 1824-1828. (Not his real first name I'm sure) Some family came from OSTERCAPPELN --he may have too. Can't confirm-church records from the Ort OSTERCAPPELN stop at 1811. The Niedersachsen archives--OSNABRÜCK, HANNOVER, AND WOLFENBÜTEL (terrific records!) probably have the information in it, but I can't read it! (Can someone who speaks German decipher the records?) My gr. grandfather listed both BADEN and HANNOVER as his place of birth. It is possible that he was referring to the town of BADEN that is now part of the Ort ACHIM.
The BÖHNE (BÖNNE is listed in the church records right by BÖHNE) family came to America on the SHIP ORIENT--BREMEN to NEW YORK-October 2, 1834. My gr. grandfather was on the passenger list as LEWIS BÖHNE. No doubt Lewis was not the name in German. Ludwig may have been one of his names--or maybe not at all. Maybe Julius and someone couldn't understand him or they changed the letters? From the ship's passenger list it looks like either Henry (oldest one) or John died at sea. It seems like my gr. grandfather was orphaned. Later my gr. grandfather changed his name to BANEY and married Fanny E. Sherrill in 1869 in Sangamon Co., IL. (While he was mining gold in California during the 1850's he used BAHNE and maybe BAHNEY as his name.)
Family members on board the Ship Orient with him: HENRY--age 60, JOHN H. (I think H)--age 30, ANN D.--age 32, LEWIS--age 10, ANN--age one and one half, and HERMANN--age 28 years and 9 months. (ages may be off, but correct I believe for Hermann)
They were listed as heading to ILLINOIS with the exception of HERMAN who was listed as going to NEW YORK. My gr. grandfather and his UNCLE HERMAN were in BEARDSTOWN, CASS COUNTY, ILLINOIS IN 1850. They probably were in OHIO before going to Illinois--I know there is a connection somehow.
HERMAN HEINRICH born 1-13-1806 was from OSTERCAPPELN but the Ortssippenbuch Katholische Kirchengemeinde records stop at 1811--no clue why. Moved? Famine? war? religion? I believe HERMAN HEINRICH'S father's real name was GERD HEINRICH and was listed as HENRY on the passenger list. GERD HEINRICH may have been born in 1770. GERD HEINRICH was married to KATARINE MARIE von der HAAR -according to church records, their first child was born JOHANN HEINRICH---September 14, 1797. He was the first of 8 children listed in the church records.
I know this is long and I thank you for reading this epistle, but I thought the details may be helpful for someone to help me.
Hopefully someone out there will recognize something!
Best Regards
Marsha
