My Heise family came from Iber, which is not far from Dassensen. There was
probably a church there, and the churchbooks might be there or in a village
nearby. However, all of the churchbooks for that area can be examined
(microfiche) at the Kirchenbuchamt in Holzminden (on the main square). Perhaps more
conveniently, one can also examine all of the old records at the main Lutheran
archive in the city of Hannover.

You could also write to the Holzminden address - I believe it's at Markt
Platz 9, but you could look it up in an online directory.

Go to Germany. It's cheap (so to speak) and lots of fun! If you can't read
the Gothic script yet, practice here first.

Would the Lutheran archive in the city of Hannover also have records for Gummern and Schnackenberg?

Hello Sharon,

yes, they have. But Gummern has no own church, it belongs to Schnackenburg. Pay attention to the right spelling: Schnackenburg, not -berg ("Berg" means "mountain", "burg" means "castle").
The website of the archives is http:www.kirche-hannover.de/kirchenbuchamt/
