Bernard Luers

There is something else you might try in locating the immigration.
Jewishgen has a search engine that allows a lot more perameters for searching. You
might try looking for ''shoemaker'' in the year range of `1854-1858. I did
look at the Hamburg handwritten indexes, and found nothing that came even
close...........a few Fredrich's .

I have not been able to connect any other LUERS families to ours - yet.

The 1860 census (rife with misspellings) shows him living in Baltimore with
his wife and child.

1860 census, City of Baltimore
Barney Leers age 28 male, shoemaker, born in Aldenburg Germany.
Anna Leers age 23 wife, born in Bremen [should be age 33]
Frank Leers age 2 male, born in MD

There are descendants of a LUEHRS family living in the Will County area of
Illinois. I have no specific information on their origination, other that
the
fact that one was married in the 1860's in IL, but born Germany. I also
believe I recall that the family has regular family reunions, so there is
certainly more information there. I'd be more than happy to put anyone in
touch
with the main researcher on that line. Perhaps she has more data to
share.
BTW....the mention of Fred Bernhard..........it is in Green Garden
  Township,
Will Co, IL. (That township is the only one who can boast of having NO
TOWN
within it's limits!!) There are a lot of Bernhard's in that part of the
county.

I agree that the name Fred-k Bernhard in the town of Green Gardner,
Will County, Illinois is most likely a surname. Otherwise the name
would have been enumerated chronologically by age with the other
children. This individual is probably a hired hand working on the
farm. In the 1880 census a Fred Bernhard appears in Will County,
Illinois and his age is correct. The only discrepancy is that he is
listed as born in Schaumburg-Lippe. In the 1860 census there are
only ditto marks for Oldenburg behind the name and the information is
often incorrect.

I have some Ahlers in my family line. (Johann Heinrich Ahlers
1814-1892) and he was a shoemaker. They trace back to Langförden,
through Oythe/Vechta to Cincinnati, Ohio. I have seen the Luers name
and Pudsack also in my researches but I have nothing in my data
currently. I will have another look at the first opportunity.

Has anyone checked the obituaries in the Cincinnati German language
newspapers, Volksfreund, Volksblatt, Freie Presse? The Volksfreund
often lists place of birth and usually has the most information.

Hello Linda,

yesterday I read the book "Pilgrims Nu" a history of St. Augustin parish Minster, Ohio
On page 252 I read this:

Bishop John Henry Luers, Diocesan First Bishop of Fort Wayne, Indiana
Born - 29.Sept.1819 in Lutten, Oldenburg
Parents - Arnold Heinrich Luers and Maria Elisabeth Kröger, Heuerleute by Heynk in Lutten
Sponsors - Johann Heinrich Heynk and Anna Maria Lindemann, the wife of Johann Heinrich Luers of Langförden, Oldenburg.

The Luers family emigrated in 1833 and settled near Stallotown(now Minster).

And so on ....

I think interesting for you,
