English: Beinhorn, Arnold, Dorenwell, Deppart (Deppert), Ruehling
Dear members of the list,
today I am asking you to help solving a question that is not unlike a detective
story.
On behalf of my friend Bruce Lammers in the USA I am searching for the origin of
his Great-Great-Great-Grandparents Beinhorn/Arnold, most likely from somewhere
in what is now Lower Saxony:
Wilhelm H. Beinhorn was born 6 April 1820, in the Kingdom of Hannover(?) and his
wife Christina Arnold was born (about) 2 April 1822 in "Central
Braunschweig", meaning perhaps somewhere in the Duchy of Braunschweig. Wilhelm
Beinhorn was a shoemaker.
Wilhelm and Christina Beinhorn had two children who were born in the Kingdom of
Hannover:
Wilhelm M. Beinhorn, born 4 March 1854 and Sophie, born 27 February 1856.
Christina had two earlier sons from different fathers (husbands ?):
Heinrich Dorenwell, born in 1843, and Ludwig Deppart (Deppert), born 17
September 1850 (?). Both accompanied their mother to the USA.
Following the immigration records Wilhelm Beinhorn arrived in the USA on 7
October 1856 as a subject of King George V of Hannover. Supposedly, he made his
original journey without his family. According to family legend, he went back to
Germany for his family and returned to the USA in 1858. It is certain that he
and his family were In the USA already in 1859, as their next child was born in
the USA on 31
August 1859.
According to one account, the family sailed to New Orleans and traveled up the
Mississippi River in a steamboat. Supposedly they went to St. Paul, Minnesota
for a while, but eventually went to Scott Co. and then Le Sueur Co., Minnesota.
The family moved to New Ulm, Minnesota into a new settlement that had been
founded by Friedrich Beinhorn who had arrived in New York in 1852, aged 30
years. It is not clear whether Friedrich Beinhorn and Wilhelm Beinhorn were
related. Another early family of the settlement was a family Ruehling
originating from Gross Schneen near Goettingen.
It can be assumed that the Wilhelm Beinhorn / Christina Arnold family originated
either from the area around Goettingen or the area around Gifhorn. In both areas
the name Beinhorn is not uncommon which otherwise is quite rare in Germany.
Also both areas are neighboring the Duchy of Braunschweig which makes the
marriage of
Wilhelm H. Beinhorn from the Kingdom of Hannover and Christina Arnold from the
Duchy of Braunschweig likely.
Research so far has not yet found any trace of the origin of both.
Can anyone help? Replies are greatly appreciated and can be sent directly to
Bruce Lammers (lammers@newulmtel.net) if they are in English or to me in both
English or German (gerd.hillebrecht@t-online.de). I will gladly translate and
forward messages to Bruce Lammers.
Thanks
