I am researching a BEHRENS family from near Sternberg (Kreis
Ludwigslust-Parchim), some of whom went to Toledo, Ohio, USA is the
1850s.
Johann Heinrich Christian BEHRENS, born circa 1790, died 29 Dec 1858
in Toledo. He was survived by 1 son and 5 daughters. He was the son of
Johann BEHRENS of Zülow who died before 1826.
He married first, 16 Oct 1820 in Hohen Pritz, Maria Catharina Dorothea
BAUMGARTEN, born circa 1790 in Woeten, died 21 Oct 1825 in Kukuk. She
was the daughter of Hans BAUMGARTEN of Techentin.
Children by first marriage:
Johann Friedrich Christian BEHRENS, born 1 Aug 1819 in Gägelow, died soon after.
Maria Sophia Friedrike BEHRENS born 20 Feb 1821 in Kukuk, married
first 24 Apr 1846 in Sternberg Johann Joachim JANING, married second 5
Nov 1858 in Sternberg Johann Joachim Wilhelm WILLBRANDT.
Maria Christina Dorothea BEHRENS born 13 Dec 1823 in Kukuk, died 13
Jan 1827 in Kukuk.
He married second, 3 Jan 1826 in Hohen Pritz, Maria Anna BAUMGARTEN,
born circa 1795 in Woeten, died 2 Feb 1855 in Kobrow. She was the
daughter of Hans BAUMGARTEN of Techentin. She is probably the Maria
Baumgarten born 1799 who appeared in the 1819 census as a servant in
the household of Heinrich Dankert in Dabel.
Children by second marriage:
Sophia Elisabeth Caroline Hannah BEHRENS born 2 Mar 1826 in Kukuk. No
further record.
Christina Sophia Maria BEHRENS “Christina” born 2 Jul 1828 in Kobrow,
married 7 Sep 1853 in Gägelow Carl Joachim Christian PRAHL. They
arrived in New York 16 Nov 1853 on the "Caeser" from Hamburg. 8
Children. She died 31 Mar 1903 in Toledo.
Carl Heinrich Johann Christian BEHRENS born 24 May 1831 in Kobrow. No
further record.
Charlotte Friedrika Dorothea BEHRENS “Dorothea” born 2 May 1836 in
Kobrow, married 9 Dec 1858 in Toledo Wilhelm HOLLAND. 9 children. She
died 18 Jun 1916 in Toledo.
Elisabeth Charlotte Christina BEHRENS “Lisette” born 7 Jun 1839 in
Kobrow, married 1 Sep 1860 in Toledo Johann BECK. 8 children. She died
31 Mar 1927 in Toledo.
My great great great grandmother was an Elisabeth BEHRENS who was born
circa 1 Apr 1828 (birth date from her death record) who was from
Kobrow and lived in the same neighborhood of Toledo as Christina and
Dorothea above, and appears to be from the same family. Her husband
was Friedrich KÖHN from "Patza," Mecklenburg-Schwerin (I still haven't
definitely identified "Patza," but probably somewhere in the Sternberg
area). Their eldest child, Friedrich, was born circa Dec 1852 in
Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Their second child, Maria, was born 25 Mar 1857
in Toledo. I have found a possible civil marriage record for them in
Toledo on 23 May 1856, though the names are a little off. The timing
of this marriage would match nicely with the passenger record for a
Fritz KÖHN, 26, Elisabeth KÖHN, 24, and Friedr KÖHN, 2 years six
months, who were from Zernin and left Hamburg on the Gellert on 1 Apr
1856, arriving in New York on May 12. The ages for the passengers are
a little off, so I am not sure this record is for my ancestors.
There does not seem to be an Elisabeth BEHRENS baptized in Kobrow or
nearby in April 1828. It is possible that she is the Sophia Elisabeth
Caroline Hannah BEHRENS born 2 Mar 1826 in Kukuk, above, for whom I
have not found any additional record.
Is anyone else interested in this family?
Has anyone come across another Elisabeth born around that time in that
general area?
How likely is it that two sisters would be called "Elisabeth" and
"Lisette" (variations of the same name) in that area and time period?
