It may have been the custom in some families. However, my father was born in
Mecklenburg in 1896 and he bore the names of his 6 Godfathers plus his first
name and he had at least five Godmothers. I still have a copy of his
"Christening Book", with pictures and short bios that the Godparents wrote.
It's a real treasure.
