My father was born in the US in 1905. His father was born in Mecklenburg
in 1869.
Dad told me that the custom for baptisms (at the time he was born in the
US) was 2 men and a woman for godparents for a boy, 2 women and a man for
a girl. And that the names of the godparents were used for the baby,
such as you described. That pattern was used for my father and his 6
sisters., as well as in many other families in their church in Nebraska.
