Baptisms in 19th century Mecklenburg

Dear Mecklenburg List:

I have a question about baptisms in 19th century Mecklenburg. My ancestors
have three or four first names, such as "Ludwig Franz Maria ENGEL", all the
names being names of godparents. All of these godparents are listed in the
church register. Does that mean that all of these godparents would have been
present at the baptism?

Thank you for your suggestions and ideas.

Sincerely,
Katherine

Katherine,

I asked my mother (born 1920 in Wismar) and she is almost positive that it
was the custom then.

I came up with another question that she did not know the answer to, so I'll
toss it out to see if anyone can come up with a good answer.
I will list an example first:

Meta Johanna Maria Franzisca Wilhelmine HARMS

GODPARENTS: Melousine Von Blcher (Meta) Johanna Becar (Johanna) Maria
Eggert (Maria) Wilhelmine Ficz (Wilhelmine) Franz Harms (Franzisca)

On all baptisms in the family for the girls there was always one man as a
godparent and for the boys one woman. Was this a custom then, or is this
just unique to my family?

Katherine have we compared notes on the Engel family?
