Liebe Forscherkolleginnen und -kollegen,
heute erreichte mich eine Anfrage aus Boston - von David Baier, für den ich die Vorfahren seiner Frau aus Hessen gefunden habe.
QUOTE
I am looking for some advice from someone in Germany, with an interest in genealogy who can point me in the right direction as I search for my family - the Baier's.
The Baier's in my family are descended from my great-grandfather, CARL BAIER (born1854, died 1906). His parents' names were FRANZ and BARBARA and he had an older sister named Barbara (b. 1850) who came to this country with him. He landed in New York in April 1872. He worked as a sign and mural painter. He reportedly attended a trade school of some sort in Germany to learn this craft.
The family myth says that Carl was born in Hof - presumably the Town of Hof in Oberfranken.
When got off the ship in New York, however, he listed "Unterfranken" as his place of birth. As far as I can tell, there is no "Hof" in Unterfranken other than a very small place between Ebrach and Gieselwind.
My grandfather and his brothers said that whenever they asked their father why he left Germany, they always got a stern "You don't want to know."
I think that my Immigrant great-grandfather may have been Jewish. His records come up when you search the Ancestry/JewishGen Jewish collections. A very interesting bit of information given that one of his grand-daughters is a Catholic nun, and another is a Mormon.
Got any suggestions for me?
Thanks,
David
