                            WW II Refugee Ships

This page is dedicated to the captains and seamen of the refugee ships
who saved millions of German lives. It is also a memorial to the
thousands upon thousands of German lives lost while fleeing from the
Russian invasion between the end of January 1945 and the middle of
   March 1945.
I thank the German artist Klaus-Rainer Forst for letting me show
photos of his oil paintings on this page. Klaus-Rainer Forst has made
it his life's ambition to paint the refugee ships.

                                  "Ubena"

Passenger ship, used as refugee transportation 1945

                           "General von Steuben"

(14660 BRT) was torpedoed and sank on February 2, 1945 near Stolpebank
                    - about 2,700 drowned in the Baltic.

                             "Wilhelm Gustloff"

hit by a Russian torpedo and sank on January 30, 1945. Some say that
5,100 of the 10,000 refugees on board drowned in the icy waters of the
Baltic. Others state that 9,300 lost their lives. The sinking of the
Wilhelm Gustloff is the greatest maritime disaster on record."
