Hello,
I am new to this list, and I hope there is someone out there who speaks
English who can help me. My great-grandfather was Christian Wintter, a
baker from Wittenburg, Lutherstadt. I believe I have found the correct
region of Germany.
About 10 years ago, after the reunification of Germany, my uncle took my
grandmother to see the home of her father. She had always been told that he
was born in the city where Luther had posted his Treatise on the Church
doors. While they were there, my uncle tried to do a little researching,
such as finding my great-grandfather's baptismal/birth record, but they were
told that these records had been destroyed when the Communist party took
control of the region.
What I am hoping to learn is whether or not this is true, and where I can
find any such records?
