Untergang des Auswandererschiffs Powhattan 1854 vor New Jersey
Hallo, Herr Theobald,
Althoff, Karl. "The Shipwreck of the Powhattan: Tragedy for Emigrants from
Budenthal in 1854." The Palatine Immigrant, vol. 28, no. 3, June 2003, pp.
26-29.
"On April 5, 1854, the American ship Powhattan...had 315 emigrants as
passengers destined for New York [sailing from the port of Le Havre]. They were
within sight of the coast of New Jersey when the ship sank with all passengers
on board....[A]mong that number were 45 Bavarian citizens...from the
governmental region of the Pfalz."

[GERMAN-SURNAMES] Powhattan Crew/Passenger Names - sunk 4/16/1854
Mon, 25 Mar 2002 12:55:03 -0500

I have been researching the Powhattan which sank off the coast of New Jersey
(USA) on April 16, 1854. It left Havre with approximately 250 German
emigrants aboard. The people who washed ashore are buried in a cemetery that I help
maintain. The manifest went down with the ship and the only record of who was
on board was based on items that washed ashore as recorded in the New York
Herald dated April 21, 1854. I hope this is of help to someone.
