Archive Records

Hello List: I went to the archives in Bamberg Bavaria with a family member
who has did record research for over 20 years and I can tell you there is a
lot of time looking through loose leaf books first for the surname then
through the next lose leaf books for the information then marking the
information you want photo copied. in between the first books you look at
you need to take them up to the person to have them get the second set of
books you need for your information which are stored in a vault. then you
have to ask for photo copies which you can not get for a week. This will
show how much these researchers do. I did see there are people in the
Archives you can get to do all this for you and i would say you may get
things you may not want. By doing it yourself you get only what you want.
Photo copies back in 2001 cost 25 Marks each.

George,
25 DM per copy sounds a bit crazy to me. You sure about that?

As to the archival request from the Osnabrück archives related to my
own request:

This morning I received a letter from the director of the archive and
another from the person I was corresponding with. Both informed me
that they have decided to copy the records I asked for. I'm still
confused as to the procedure and why I had so much trouble placing an
order and have asked for further clarification.

The way I understand the situation now is that the archive is
understaffed and does not have time to find and copy records if the
request affects more then some limited number of names. I do not know
what the limit is and have asked for clarification.

The various emails I received tried to push me off to a professional
researcher like Falk Liebezeit to do research. At least that's what I
think. From my direction I did not know I was asking for 'any'
research at all but rather that I just placed an order for copies of
certain documents (which I listed) which contain certain names, which
I also listed. Apparently this consumes more work then I had
envisioned and they want someone else to pick out what I want and
then have the archive copy the found pages. I've asked for
clarification on this.

Nowhere does it say that archival copy requests must be limited to x
number of copies or people. Being that the archive agreed that there
is no limitation mentioned up front, they will honor my request. I'm
supposed to get microfilmed copies within three weeks. Halleluja.

Bottom line is that I think I upset the official apple cart "because"
I asked for a whole bunch of things when they normally only get a
request for one ancestor at a time. In my case none of my people
listed in the archives as emigrant applicants actually emigrated and
I would like to see just what they did that the archive has.

Here's what I asked for by Gliederung (AmT) and archival file. It
apparently blew their cork. We'll see what the damage will be.
