Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am the son of a woman from Breslau. I am now 50 years old and both my
parents died when I was just eleven.
My mother was born in 1923 is Breslau and was forced to leave in 1945. She
and my grandmother made it to Frankfort em Main. My sister was born in Germany
in 1946 and I was born in 1953 in the United States. I have lived in the
United States all of my life.
I have a business trip arranged for 29 March 2004 through 10 April 2004 in
Munich and would like to find a translator / guide for a trip from Munich to
Wroclaw, Poland or a series of guides.
I have always wanted to make this trip but feel I would get much more out of
it if someone with more history of the area could accompany me.
I have done much research on the area from what I can find here in the USA.
This is a trip I have waited for many years.
Both my children are grown and now is the time for me to take this trip.
Is there any interest among this group or any other organization I should
contact.
Thank you and excuse my using English and not German. I only took one year
of German in school and that was many years ago.
Thank you.

Dear Rodney,
you will start the trip after April 10th.
You can get a german or polish student as a guide.
Contact either the university of Munich or of Wroclaw.
You can prefer a german or a polish guide. March and April their are holidays at the universities.
Freundlich grüßt Sie aus Hemhofen

Hello Rod,
my mother-in-law was either born in Breslau in 1923 and will be 80 this November. I think you simply should communicate with some list members (within the list or privately) before you start your trip. German or Polish students can be very helpful and tell you a lot but few about personal histories. If you know something about the residence of your grandmother and mother, you surely can find more details from list members. If not, there are different address directories in German libraries, some of them even in temporary use of list members who can give you details and maybe even other inhabitants of the house who might be still alive.
The uncle of my wife (brother of my mother-in-law) was born in Breslau too and has just become 76. He speaks quite good English, is still busy in genealogical research and visites Breslau once every year (he is just going to leave for Breslau next week). If you like, I can give him your e-mail address.
Best wishes,
