Hi List!
Since the subject of Alfhausen came up, I thought I'd mention what ancestors I
have baptized at St. Johann's in Alfhausen.
In the past few days I have rec'd copies of my ancestor's baptism, Herman
Heinrich Wischer of Coloni Kleine Rechtien in Thiene born July 16, 1833 son of
Hermanni Henrici WISCHER and Maria Gertrudis WESSEL. From what I have rec'd, it
looks like the father married a 2nd time to a Catherine KROEGER and they had one
son Gerhard.
Sept. 23, 1843 the family which also included a daughter Elizabeth from the 1st
marriage left Alfhausen for America, settling in Cincinnati, OH where the father
died 1851 & mother/step-mother died in 1852.
The son, my 2nd great-grandfather, known here as Henry WISKER, married 1st to
Caroline STAGGENBORG of Oldenburg in Cincinnati 1852. Within a few years the
family moved across the river to Covington, KY where Caroline died in 1865.
Henry married again in 1866 to Bernadette DUNHOFT in 1860 (my ancestor) who
apparently is also of somewhere in Oldenburg......
Henry's descendants who lived to become adults used the surname WISCHER.
I understand very little German, so often have a hard time following details of
this list, but Alfhausen I understood. I recently contacted Siegfried Smig who
has made transcriptions & scanned copies of St. Johann's records:
http://www.sjsmid.nl/index.html. In time I hope to purchase some if not all of
his records. Just too soon after the holiday spending at the moment.
If anyone connects to the above names, I would love to correspond.

Hello Linda,
the origin of Staggenborg could be Lohne-Brockdorf in Oldenburg province. First notice of this farm 1498 - Lutmer ter Stakenborg. Catholic church St.Gertrud in Lohne.
The origin of Dünhöft could be a farm in Bakum (close to Lohne). First notice of the farm 1545 - Lüdeke Dunhovet. Catholic church in Bakum.
I hope it help,
Werner
Hi Linda,
I think we might have exchanged messages before, as I am also from
Cincinnati originally, and my grandparents emigrated from Thiene (Alfhausen)
and Erlte (Visbek) in the 1920s.
I had the chance to visit these areas last year and really enjoyed it. St.
Johann church in Alfhausen is very beautiful and well cared for. I believe
the baptismal font there is about 500 years old. I hope you have a chance
to see it someday.

Werner,
Always coming to my aid!
I'll make notes of this, if I can ever get back this far.
I do have a note of 2 Duenhoft's, A.M. & Carolina coming from Vechta to
Cincinnati in 1866 that I found interesting.
On my Dunhoft line I have the heirs of a Armina Braman who died in Hamilton Co.
OH 1963. My great-uncle remembered receiving money from her estate & upon
checking it out, so did my grandfather. Many names were listed. Armina AKA
Minnie, was unmarried, her mother had been a Dunhoft. By laws here, her estate
would have gone to descendants of her parents siblings if no husband, children,
parents survived her. From what I have found, they immigrated sporadically, from
the 1860's to the 1890's. Some I have found on ships lists, again mentioning
origins of Vechta or Visbek.
There seem to be few Dunhoft/Dunhoff's here, but what are seem to be primarily
Cincinnati?No. KY.
Did I see somewhere that you are heading this way next summer for a reunion?
