The following is an excerpt from a letter written in 1801, which was kindly forwarded to me by a contact in Germany who is researching the same family. I understand most of it, but am having difficulty with a couple of things besides the archaic writing style. I would truly appreciate any assistance any of you can offer on the following:
First, what is the meaning of "leibl. Geschwister kind mit mir" in the context of this sentence?
Secondly, this text is full of abbreviations which mostly end in "l". I am not familiar with this and wonder if someone could explain?
"Es hat die Hannoveril.Gel. Lieutenant v. Wurmb, die von Vatterseiden herr leibl. Geschwister kind mit mir ist, eine Tochter an den Hannoverl. Gel.Major und Comantanten in Goettingen v. Oldershausen(?) verheyrathet, deßen älteste Tochter Stifttsdame in dem kaysl. freyen Reichs Stiftt Fishbeck werden soll, da nun aber die Faml. Schott in selbem nicht bekannt ist, so wolte das Stiftt von einem Domstifft, um die Grß Mutter der frl. anzunehmen, ein Capitl. Attestat haben, daß die Schotte, Ritter und Stiftsmäßig seyen. "
"von Vatterseiden herr leibl. Geschwister kind mit mir" would mean:
The person is my brother/sister, coming from the same father I come from.
Concernig the abbreviations, ending with something that looks like an "l":
As far as I know, this "l" is just an indication that the word is
abbreviated. It should not to be taken as the letter "l" (an normally, in
these cases, it should not look exactly like an "l", only similar).
der Ort ist das ehemalige Reichsstift Fischbeck, vgl.
da ist schon vieles erl�utert.
Das "Geschwisterkind" hat Karl >federschmidt@wtal.de< schon erkl�rt.
Die Aufnahme in das Stift setzt adelige Herkunft voraus. Die Familie Schott ist
dem Stift aber nicht als adelig bekannt ("da� die Schotte, Ritter und
Stiftsm��ig seyen") so da� soll sein Domstift (das dem Domkapitel zugeordnet ist
und hier wohl die Landesherrschaft repr�sentiert) den Adelsnachweis best�tigen.
Als "Adelsprobe" wird hier der adelige Nachweis bis zur Gro�elterngeneration
verlangt.
