Not to get under anyone's skin but I was born 56 years ago so
I do not have first hand knowledge...........or having lived the
situation. My only link to war is via Viet Nam (not exactly a
picnic either) and I would rather forget most of what I saw and
did.
My mother was from Kletellen (Georgenheid) and she spent
the war in America wondering if her four brothers and many
cousins would survive.................her brothers somehow did
and the majority of her cousins did not. She was a quiet
woman that never spoke of the information received from
the "old country". It must have torn her heart to pieces waiting
for those fateful letters of information from relatives and
having to read daily accounts from the American view.
Had my mother and her brothers that immigrated been more
open with the information they possessed because they lived
the times..............I would most likely have been educated
sooner.
I also lack German reading skills which prevents me from
reading long.............at times very long letters, books and
other material related to WW2 but as time passes, I am
regaining some skills to understand what it being written.
