1852 Hannover Census

I understand that there is a census for Hannover taken in 1852. Is there someone who can do lookups in the Steimbke Parish (Stockse) area? Is there an index for the census?

Hi Doreen:

The following URL will give you some information on the 1852 census. http://hist.de/

I looked for the parishes you listed and did not find them, but the information which Jens has on his site is not yet complete.

For me, the information I needed was complete and I found my GF's family in one of the census pamphlets which Jens made available.

By the way, the Lutheran church in Steimbke has excellent old hand-written records, but I would suppose you would need to hire someone to go look through them. One of the pastors had a very heavy hand with ink, and it leaked through the pages, making some pages very difficult to read. And even the people who work there cannot always read the old German script.

Their records cover all of their old "chapels," including Stckse. My great-grandfather's full name was discovered there by my maybe-cousin. That was good. She also was able to dispel the thought that a particular man in Illinois was my great-grandfather's brother. That was bad. But, given that he also is listed in the same book, 8 months younger than my great-uncle, makes him another maybe-cousin.

Unfortunately, my birth name might as well be "Smith," even to the present day, in Steimbke. Siiigh.

When my maybe-cousin Marie comes in two weeks, I plan to send a book on disk back with her to give to the church. Maybe I'll get lucky.

Hi Loretta, what do you mean with "Siiigh"?
Kind regards
